Book Review—Nothing

Growing up can be filled with missteps—children aren’t immune from bad choices and wrongdoing, and circumstances out of their control can cause them suffering. So the truth of Romans 8:38-39 is an important concept kids need to hide in their hearts.

This picture book is a good way to help them do it.

Nothing: Nothing Can Separate You from God’s Love!
written by Natalee Creech, illustrated by Joseph Cowman
published by Worthy Kids (2019)
jacketed hardcover picture book, 32 pages, 8.9 x 0.45 x 9.35 inches

The opening spread asks, “Can ANYTHING separate me from God’s love?” and the remainder of the book gives kids the firm answer NO in three groupings: no weather conditions, no place on on or above or in the depths of planet Earth, and no matter what we’ve done.

A memorable refrain emphasizes this truth throughout the book:

There is nothing so powerful,
nothing so strong—
God’s love is too high and too deep
and too long!

The final spread keeps the verses from Roman 8 in context: Paul wrote them speaking to those who have been adopted into God’s family, both loved and forgiven.

The illustrations, featuring boys and girls from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, contain plenty to look at without overwhelming the simple text.

Nothing was a 2020 ECPA Christian Book Awards finalist in the children’s category. Highly recommend.

Making God’s wonders known to the next generation,

– Diane
